This beautiful 19th-century handcrafted, devotional, heart box, created as a Christmas keepsake and religious memento.
The exterior features rich red silk velvet with intricate gold metallic thread embroidery spelling "NOEL". Decorative flourishes scattered across the surface. The heart is edged with gold trim and finished with an elegant gold tassel at the bottom point.
A wonderful secret lies inside, when opened, the box reveals a charming nativity scene nestled in an aged silk lining in golden tones.
The central focus is the infant Jesus a figure lying on white fabric, dressed in a pink garment with decorative trim and beading. The scenes are adorned with small paper scraps or "chromolithograph" angels and religious figures (typical of Victorian-era devotional art) , along with tiny decorative floral elements.
The craftsmanship reflects the Victorian era's love of sentimental religious objects and the popular tradition of creating elaborate handmade Christmas decorations. The panels that fold out suggest this may be a type of devotional shrine, designed to be displayed during the Christmas season.
The combination of fine needlework, delicate materials, and miniature religious imagery makes this a wonderful example of 19th-century folk art and religious craft traditions.
The overall condition is remarkable for its age, (some fading to the interior decoration), the rich colors and delicate details are still well-preserved, making it both a beautiful artifact and a touching example of personal religious devotion from the 19th century.
